Gavin Wolfenden
Trustee The Astbury Mere Trust owns the Country Park but the lake within it is and its foreshore are owned by the Stoke on Trent Angling Society who lease it to the Sailing Centre.
There has been a longstanding problem that a minority of dog owners are allowing their dogs to enter onto the Anglers land to the detriment to the users of that land. Both organisations have been extremely patient about this issue over the years, but pressure has been mounting for the trust to implement a measure to stop this problem from happening. A further motivating factor has been that some children have been frightened by dogs running loose on these footpaths.
At their last meeting, the trustees decided that it was in the best interest of all our visitors to introduce the requirement that all dogs should be kept on a lead on the footpaths to the east, south and west of the lake. Dogs will still be able to run free in the main parkland to the north of the site and in the woodlands. This leaves over 20 acres of park land in which dogs can run free, providing they are under their owner’s close control.
Changes are also being made to the foreshore to provide an improved dog swiming area and trees are being trimmed to provide better views of the lake from the Country Park.
Most people agree, that expecting dog owners to keep their dogs on leads in the areas stipulated is both reasonable and in everyone’s best interest. We are hoping that dog owners will respect this new measure and cooperate to ensure that everyone visiting the park, fishing in the mere and sailing upon it can enjoy doing so.
